Metal braces and Invisalign® aligners are both effective treatments that can help to correct a number of orthodontic issues. Our Langley Straight Smile dentists offer some advice for determining which of these orthodontic treatment options is right for you.
Metal Braces
Metal braces are ideal for those who want to correct tooth misalignment issues but aren't particularly concerned about the aesthetics of metal braces.
Metal braces are an effective and efficient way to correct complex misalignment issues, as well as to fix spacing issues, bite issues and tooth alignment issues.
Correcting orthodontic issues with traditional metal braces can take anywhere from 18 months to 3 years, however tooth movement is noticeable in a fairly short amount of time.
Invisalign®
Invisalign is also effective and efficient at correcting misalignment issues but Invisalign offers you a more discreet way to straighten your teeth.
Invisalign clear orthodontic aligners are removable, and almost impossible to see when worn.
The custom Invisalign aligners are made from a smooth clear plastic which can help to make Invisalign more comfortable that traditional metal braces. With Invisalign there are no brackets and wires to irritate the inside of your mouth.
Every smile is unique and treatment times will vary based on the extent and severity of your tooth misalignment issue, however the average duration of Invisalign® treatment is somewhere between 6 and 18 months.
Primarily, this shorter average treatment time, when compared to metal braces, is a result of the fact that Invisalign® is typically considered a gentler, less invasive option perfect for treating less severe or complex misalignment issues.
It's also important to note that this average treatment time is based the patient adhering to the treatment instructions provided by their dentist. This includes wearing aligners for the prescribed 20 - 22 hours every day, throughout the duration of treatment.
Treatment will take longer if the patient wears their aligners less frequently than prescribed, or for shorter durations each day.
Invisalign clear aligners and traditional metal braces are both effective orthodontic treatment options. Which of these options will work best for you will depend on a combination of your personal preferences and the severity of your misalignment issues.
